Sodium chlorate (chemical formula: NaClO₃) is an inorganic compound that typically appears as white or slightly yellowish orthorhombic crystals. It has a salty and cool taste, is highly soluble in water, and only slightly soluble in ethanol. Chemically, sodium chlorate is highly reactive, exhibiting strong oxidizing properties in acidic solutions, and decomposes above 300°C, releasing oxygen gas. Sodium chlorate is widely used across various industries, most notably as a key raw material for producing chlorine dioxide, sodium chlorite, perchlorates, and other chlorate compounds. In industrial production, sodium chlorate is manufactured via either electrolysis or chemical reduction methods, with common raw materials including hydrogen peroxide, sodium carbonate, and caustic soda.
Sodium chlorate is not only used in the chemical industry but also extends to fields such as water treatment, pulp bleaching, and potassium permanganate production. For instance, in water treatment, sodium chlorate can be employed to generate chlorine dioxide, which serves as an effective disinfectant. In the pulp bleaching process, sodium chlorate effectively removes impurities from the pulp, enhancing paper quality. However, sodium chlorate also poses certain risks: when mixed with phosphorus, sulfur, or organic materials and subjected to impact, it can easily ignite and even explode. Therefore, strict adherence to safety regulations is essential during storage and handling.
